Indy Reads

Our mission is to build the literacy, English language, and job readiness skills to empower adults and families to reach their full potential. And our vision is simple: 100% literacy for all. We're working to make this dream a reality by providing free literacy, English language, and workforce readiness programs to adults through our innovative Community Classrooms at sites around Marion County.

Teach People to Read as a Volunteer Tutor

Readying Readers for Life When you teach someone to read, you change their life. The ability to read and write gives us access to information, independence, communication, and so much more. Adults who cannot read do not have this access, and the world remains closed to them. Overcoming a literacy limitation opens up new doors for educational, career, and financial attainment. You have the opportunity to give back to the Indianapolis community by tutoring in our Community Classrooms. Availability Needed: 2-3 hours per week for 19 weeks minimum. Option to renew each semester. Class Options: High School Equivalency (HSE) prep, English Language Learners (ELL), and/or Literacy Foundations HSE - Serves adults seeking to earn their HSE diploma. ELL - Serves adults who want to learn English as a language. Literacy Foundations - Serves adults seeking to grow their literacy skills for personal life goals. Tutoring options available in-person and/or online via Zoom. Tutor Training Requirements: New volunteers must attend a two-hour training before starting their volunteering commitment in a classroom. Additional online training options and materials will also be provided for ongoing learning opportunities. Join our teachers and AmeriCorps service members at Indy Reads as a volunteer tutor and help us change lives. Once the volunteer form (button below) is submitted, we will send you an email with options to sign up for a volunteer info session to learn more. *Must be 18 years of age or older to volunteer.
